Walleigh wins second calypso title in St Lucia

CASTRIES, St Lucia, Monday July 21, 2014, CMC – A commanding performance by school principal Wulstan Alfred, stage name “Walleigh,” earned him his second Calypso King title at Saturday’s calypso finals at the Beausejour grounds in the island’s north.

Alfred scored 737 points to win the 2014 Calypso Monarch title, edging out former monarch Minelle Delice, stage name “Menelle,” who earned a second place.

Walleigh performed “Stich Reform,” written by Delthia Naitram and “Street Vibes,” written by himself. Both songs were arranged by Timothy Mondesir.

Activities continued Sunday with the Groovy and Power Soca competition, to be followed by J’Ouvert and the parade of 14 costume bands on Monday and Tuesday.

On Saturday Walleigh also captured the most Humorous Calypso prize with “Street Vibes” followed by Ti Carro’s “Minister of Erection,” Ashanti’s “False Advertising” and Blaze’s “De Rum.”

Defending champion Minelle secured second place with 720 points singing “The Power of Words” and “Back Pain.”
