Tory’s attempt at Caribbean Carnival dance moves a funny sight

TORONTO – Mayor John Tory just wants to dance.

Tory was asked to show off his best moves during Tuesday’s kickoff of the Toronto Caribbean Carnival at David Pecaut Square, near King and John Sts.

He gyrated his hips awkwardly to the sound of laughter from the audience.

“Year after year we have an event that celebrates who we are, it celebrates how we live together, it celebrates Caribbean culture and music … and the Caribbean community in this city,” Tory said. “We celebrate each other.”

Formerly known as Caribana, the festival incorporates Caribbean cultural events throughout the month of July and wraps up during the long Aug. 1 weekend with a colourful parade along Lakeshore Blvd. W.

Tory said that besides the parade, his favourite carnival event is the steel drum competition.

Those at the kickoff included Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and Councillor Joe Mihevc.
