This fisher man explains the loss of lives on the Caribbean sea
By Amilcar Lewis
You probably have seen both national and, more critically, international outrage at the agreement between the Jamaican government and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to develop a Chinese-initiated logistics hub on the Goat Islands (a part of Portland Bight Protected Area, which happens to contain the highest concentration of fishers in Jamaica).
One of the consequence of that proposed development is its effect on the fishermen, and women, of that area. Known for our love for fish, most Jamaicans have no real idea of what it actually takes bring fresh fish to the markets each and every morning. This video entitled “Seatime Fishaman” attempts to rectify that by venturing into the Forum Fishing Village located on Forum Beach in St. Catherine. Directors Darren Scott & Gabrielle Blackwood, through a collection of great shots and one to one interviews, really brings viewers into the sometimes dangerous world of an Jamaican offshore fisherman. While, it is obvious that this video was not done as a reaction to the Goat Island’s ruling, it does however bring up the same issues that fisherman will be faced with during and post development. Truly an interesting piece please take the time to enjoy it and don’t forget to leave your comments on the page.
